I once saw BBC, a major news channel in the UK, reporting on Korea's so-called "kkondae" culture.

영국의 유력 뉴스 채널인 BBC에서 한국의 소위 '꼰대' 문화를 보도하는 것을 본 적이 있다.

▶lecture someone 훈수를 두다, 잔소리를 하다

These people are always preachy and try to lecture people.

이러한 사람들은 매사에 남을 가르치려 하고 훈수를 두려고 한다.

 

▶impose one's views on others 타인에게 자신의 견해를 강요하다

They also try to impose their political views on others. 

그리고 자신의 정치적인 성향을 타인에게 강요하기도 한다.

 

▶have no manners 버릇이 없다

▶make too much of 을 과도하게 강조하다

They often say things like "kids these days have no manners," and make too much of etiquette.

"요즘 애들은 버릇이 없어"와 같은 말을 자주 하고, 유독 예절을 많이 따지기도 한다.

▶sense of entitlement 특권의식

The kkondae mentality is created by authoritarianism and a sense of entitlement. 

꼰대 성향은 권위주의와 특권 의식에서 비롯되는 것이다.

▶seniority 연공서열,서열관계

a misguided version of Confucian culture that emphasizes seniority and age. 

또한, 연공서열과 나이를 중시하는 왜곡된 유교 문화도 그 원인이다.

 

▶set aside authority 권위를 내려놓다

▶set of values 가치관

It's important to set aside authority and communicate with others who have a different set of values.

권위를 내려놓고 자신과 다른 가치관을 가진 타인과 소통할 줄 아는 것이 중요하다. 

 

▶drive someone up the wall 매우 짜증나게 하다

It's driving me up the wall.

엄청 짜증나. 

 

▶brush off 무시하다, 묵살하다

He brushes off everyone else's opinions.

다른 사람들의 의견은 아예 묵살한다.

 

▶voice an opinion 의견을 말하다

▶raise an objection 반론, 이의를 제기하다

It must be hard to voice an opinion or raise an objection.

의견을 내거나 반론을 제기하기가 힘들겠네.

 

▶cut off communication 소통을 단절시키다

He's just cutting off communication at the office.

사내 의사통을 단절시키고 있어.
